Irrigation Training Workshop for MAIL, MRRD and MEW Professionals

In the series of professional
development trainings, for the first time Capacity Development and
Institutional Strengthening (CDIS)/FAO project conducted a training workshop on
Spate Irrigation in order to train MAIL, MRRD and MEW professionals. This
workshop is being conducted by both national and international Spate Irrigation
experts from FAO, SINF, MEW and Kabul University. The training started in MAIL on 10 December
2016.
Spate Irrigation is a Flood Based
Farming System (FBFS). It is about changing the negative connotation that is
generally given to flood to a positive one. In other words, it is a process of converting flood disasters into blessing and
an asset for agriculture, livestock, forestry, and groundwater
management.
The training aims is to
train MAIL, MRRD and MEW employees on spate irrigation and includes sharing of
information on spate research projects in Afghanistan, Spate Irrigation Network
Afghanistan (SINA). Spate Irrigation training includes diverse topics like:
water and food security, spate irrigation rights and rules, roads for water
harvesting, spate irrigation engineering structures, social and environmental
benefits of spate irrigation, soil management and moisture conservation, spate
irrigation agronomy and minor crops, management of micro climate and spate
irrigation, innovations in conjunctive use of floods and ground water, implementation
of intense watershed programs, and water harvesting – practices and recent
innovations.
This training workshop will continue
for five days and equip all its 30 participants with updated knowledge on spate
irrigation and enable them to practice it in managing the available water
resources in Afghanistan.

Spate irrigation is a relatively new topic for the young engineers. Even though it has been observed that this technology was traditionally in practice in the region, it is not well documented. Hence, this topic is very interesting and useful for the young engineers.
