Field demonstrations

Background:

Field Demonstrations of appropriate irrigation and agronomic practices and technologies with different treatments and trials have been an integral part of the Capacity Development of Irrigation Directorate (CDIS) Project. The project gathered experiences of conducting several Field Demonstrations for different seasons with different crops including tomato, potato, Grapes mushroom, etc. Hence, it was decided that these experiences should be properly documented for future users and uses.

Water resources in Afghanistan are limited. Population growth and cyclic droughts have been adding pressure on the available water resources. Moreover, climate change has been adversely affecting the snow reserves of the country. In this context, effective planning and management of water resources becomes more vital using the modern tools of spatial and temporal information on water sources and availability, patterns of farmers’ water demand, irrigation methods and practices, and physical and operational features of prevailing irrigation systems.  

Irrigation Association (IA)

Afghanistan has 6.5 Million hectare of cultivable land out of which only 5.6 Million hectare is cultivated. Out of this, 3.3 Million hectare is irrigated at varying degrees and the remaining 2.3 Million hectare is rain-fed agriculture. Of this, 3 Million hectare is Community Managed Irrigation Schemes (CMIS) while 0.3 Million hectare is formal schemes. It shows the importance of community-based irrigation management systems. The National Irrigation Program (NIP) also signifies the role of community-based irrigation management systems. The ultimate goal is to increase production and productivity through improved irrigation practices.

Irrigation Association (IA) is a volunteer association of real and legal persons which is established to manage water in an irrigation network. Irrigation Association, once established, plays an important role in community-based irrigation management systems. After the establishment of irrigation associations it is very important to strengthen these associations to build their capacities on various aspects of irrigation agronomy and on-farm water management to cope with issues concerning efficient and equitable utilization of water on the farmer’s field. Irrigation associations can also play their role during implementation of irrigation schemes. After the completion of an irrigation scheme, irrigation associations can operate and maintain the schemes.

Establishment and strengthening of irrigation associations are key activities of CDIS project. Since its inception, CDIS project has established two irrigation associations in Mirbachakot and Dehsabz Districts of Kabul Province. CDIS project has been providing trainings to irrigation associations on various aspects of irrigation agronomy and on-farm water management.

Training Surveyors to build capacity for developing irrigation systems

Irrigation is the key to increase agricultural production and to help reduce poverty. This is especially true for Afghanistan due to its low seasonal rainfalls and extended draught periods. Building better canals or renovating existing ones requires skilled personnel trained with modern instruments and tools of the trade.

Field Day on Drip Irrigation in Mirbachkot District May 17th, 2016

A “Field Day on Drip Irrigation in Mirbachakot District” was successfully conducted by JICA funded Capacity Development for Irrigation Directorate Project (CDIS Output 2) on Tuesday, May 17^th, 2016.

About sixteen (16) participants from ID and farmers from Shaheedullah Irrigation Scheme participated in the field day.

OJT on Diagnostic Analysis of Zerdarak Irrigation Scheme, Dehsabz District

A training on “On – the Job Training on Diagnostic Analysis of Zerdarak Irrigation Scheme” was successfully conducted by JICA funded Capacity Development for Irrigation Directorate Project (CDIS Output 2) from April 18^th – 20^th, 2016. About Twenty three (23) participants from different DAILs of MAIL participated in the OJT.
